Jacksonville cyclist Jenita Porfilio, 64, died August 2, 2006, as the result of being struck by a car in rural Ontario, Canada.看 She was killed on the fourth day of a 12-day ride.看 Dan, her husband, was riding directly behind her when the crash happened.看 They were in a group of three cyclists riding along the Trent-Severn Waterway with Jenita at the front when a car came around a curve, out of control, and crossed the centerline. Jenita could not avoid the car, which was coming at her sideways.看 The car struck her bike, and she was pitched about 30 feet in the air, landing in a nearby ditch.看 She was flown by helicopter to a Toronto hospital, more than 100 miles away where she died.看
Jenita had ridden more than 35,000 miles in 34 states and Canada.看 But there were many other numbers that helped define her life.看 She was a mother of three, a four year survivor of breast cancer and had helped build 35 Habitat for Humanity houses in Marion, Indiana.
